Attorney General Keith Ellison has responded to a Supreme Court decision that invalidated tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump. The ruling follows multiple lawsuits, including one filed on April 23, 2025, by Ellison and a coalition of 11 other state attorneys general.
In his statement, Ellison said, “It is welcome news that the Supreme Court struck down Donald Trump’s unlawful tariffs and ended the pain they were causing to Minnesota farmers, small businesses, and families. I filed my lawsuit challenging these tariffs because it was clear from the start that Trump invented emergencies to justify his tariffs, and I could not sit back and allow Trump to violate the law and raise costs on hardworking Minnesotans. Today’s ruling is a vindication of the work my fellow attorneys general and I have been doing for over a year now to rein in this lawless president and to stand up for the rights, freedoms, and the pocketbooks of the people of Minnesota.”
The legal challenge argued that the administration lacked proper justification for imposing the tariffs. The Supreme Court’s decision brings relief to affected groups in Minnesota who had experienced increased costs due to these trade measures.
The Office of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison continues its commitment as an equal opportunity employer.
