The Minnesota Supreme Court is seeking a trial-level public defender to serve a three-year term on the Rules of Criminal Procedure Advisory Committee. The committee is responsible for monitoring, evaluating, and recommending updates to the procedures that govern criminal trials throughout Minnesota.

According to the court, members of the committee play a role in shaping reforms that affect every courtroom in the state. “Help monitor, evaluate, and recommend updates to the procedures that govern criminal trials across the state,” reads part of the call for applicants. The committee also values input from its members and from public comments: “The Committee hears public comments and steers reforms that impact every courtroom in Minnesota.”

Meetings for this volunteer position are scheduled as needed, which allows members to continue their regular legal practice while serving on the committee. The Supreme Court is looking for a Minnesota-licensed attorney with trial experience who currently serves as a public defender and is interested in collaboration and improving the justice system.

Applications should include a letter of interest and resume sent by email to Christa Rutherford‑Block, Clerk of Appellate Courts, at mjcappellateclerkofcourt@courts.state.mn.us or by mail to the Clerk of Appellate Courts Office at 305 Minnesota Judicial Center, 25 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., St. Paul, MN 55155. The deadline for applications is 4:30 p.m. on Friday, February 27, 2026; late submissions will not be considered.
