Michael Lewis of Minneapolis was sentenced on Mar. 5 to five months in prison and one year of supervised release for threatening to murder a member of Congress, according to U.S. Attorney Daniel N. Rosen.

The case highlights the seriousness with which federal authorities treat threats against public officials. Such threats can disrupt the work of elected representatives and raise concerns about safety in government offices.

Court documents show that on March 26, 2025, Michael Paul Lewis, age 53, called the office of a United States Congressperson and left a voicemail threatening murder. When law enforcement visited his apartment, Lewis admitted to making the call.

Lewis was sentenced on one count of threatening to murder a United States official. The investigation was conducted by the FBI and the U.S. Capitol Police.

Assistant U.S. Attorney LeeAnn Bell prosecuted the case.
